Matt Schildt, assistant professor of music, had his composition "Nocturnal Passage" for flute and piano selected for performance at the recent Society of Composers, Inc., National Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The piece was performed by Adams State College music faculty Dr. William Lipke and Dr. Tracy Doyle.
Ben Kern, head strength coach, and Dr. Tracey Robinson, associate professor of HPPE, conducted a research study on a new sport supplement called beta-alanine. The study used Adams State football players and wrestlers as subjects. The results were very positive. The abstract of the study was accepted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The pair presented the study at the Rocky Mountain Chapter of ACSM in January (Olympic Training Center, Colo. Springs). Kern will present the study at the ISSN national conference this June in New Orleans, and at the NSCA national conference this July in Las Vegas, NV.
Officer Layne Hall of the ASCPD completed firearms instructor training. Hall's training is part of an ongoing effort to develop trainers within the department for skills that must remain current. Chief Joel F. Shults is the department's Taser instructor and Officer Tresa Rupright has been chosen to become the department's defensive tactics trainer. Officer Rupright and Officer Alycia Riggs attended a three-day child abuse investigation training session covering child homicide and shaken baby syndrome. The training was conducted by an internationally renowned expert who was brought from Canada to the valley by the San Luis Valley Law Enforcement Training Foundation, of which ASCPD is a member.
Armando Valdez and Richard Vallone, assistant professors of business at Adams State College, had their article, "Using Partnerships to Create Opportunity in Inopportune Times," published in the winter 2009 edition of "AUPHA Exchange," a publication of the Association of University Programs in health administration.
The two were instrumental in creating the health care administration program at Adams State and recently formed a partnership with Pueblo Community College to offer the courses on the Pueblo campus.
In establishing the program on both campuses, the professors reached out to local health care facilities. In the Alamosa area, they created an advisory board that includes the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center and Valley Wide Health Systems. According to Vallone, health care facilities in the Pueblo area are just as willing to offer services for the new program at PCC.
