ASC launches STAY for developmental education

(04-21-2009)

The Structured Transitional Academic Year (STAY) program will be required this fall for incoming freshman who need two or more developmental courses, as determined by their ACT/SAT or placement test scores. Karen Lemke, interim director of developmental education, estimated 75 freshman will be required to participate.

STAY was conceived by the Retention Task Force under direction of Provost Michael Mumper. ASC's retention rate between 2007 and 2008 for students who were in two or more developmental courses was 33 percent, compared to an overall retention rate of 60 percent. About 67 percent of ASC students take at least one developmental course.

STAY students will be assigned a course schedule to help them successfully complete their remedial education requirements before taking general education courses and required coursework for degree completion.

The program also includes tutoring and an optional service learning component. Questions about STAY may be directed to Karen Lemke, ext. 7969.
