News & Accomplishments

The book, "Rise, Do Not Be Afraid," by assoc. professor of English, Aaron Abeyta is a finalist for the Colorado Book Award in fiction. "Table Walking at Nighthawk," by Dr. Carol Guerrero-Murphy, professor of English and chair of the Department of English, Theatre and Communications, was nominated for the Colorado Book Award in poetry, and is a Finalist for the WILLA Women Writing the West Award. Both authors will travel to give readings associated with the award.

The composition faculty of the English, Theatre, and Communications Department attended a one-day composition workshop in Denver. Of particular interest, in addition to various members hanging out the windows of the van and shouting "Get on the Bus!" was the increasing focus on visual literacy in composition.

Dr. Mark Finney, Dr. Mark Finney, Assistant Professor of Mass Communications, and his wife, Erin, announce the birth their daughter, Anabelle, September 13. All are doing well.

Bobbi Maul, admin. assistant II in English, Theatre & Communications, and her husband, Lee, announce the birth of a daughter, Kaylee Rae. Sept. 23. Kaylee weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces, measured 19 inches and was welcomed by big brother Dustin.

Dr. Stuart Hilwig, associate professor of history, has signed a contract with Palgrave Macmillan to publish, "1968 from the Other Side of the Piazza: The Italian Response to the Student Revolt." The expected publication date is June 2009.

ASC Police Chief, Dr. Joel F. Shults, presented a report to the Colorado Attorney General and POST board on recent activities of the Curriculum Subject Matter Expert Committee regarding police training in the state at a recent meeting in Canon City. Shults' article, "Contextual Compliance Tool Kit," was recently published in the PoliceOne.com electronic newsletter. The article explains training and reporting requirements for police use of force.

Chief Shults and Officers Layne Hall and Johnny Romero attended a sexual assault awareness training seminar co-hosted by ASCPD and other college entities.

Officer Alycia Riggs attended a three-day Crime Scene and Digital Photography course conducted by the Colorado Law Enforcement Officers' Association.

Officer Johnny Romero attended a week-long course on Crime Scene Investigation conducted in Pueblo by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Elizabeth Thomas, assistant professor of management, has fulfilled her goal of teaching in ASC's School of Business. She is a 2005 ASC graduate and earned her MBA from Arizona State in 2007. She is working on a Ph.D. in Management Education (emphasis in on-line learning) from Capella University. She is part of the committee developing the online MBA program for Adams State College. Drew Houston is an administrative assistant II in the department of English, Theatre, and Communications. A 2008 ASC grad with a degree in communications, she plans to pursue a graduate degree in Communications at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. She earned many honors as part of the women's track and field team, including being a member of ASC's first 4x100 meter relay team to win a National Title. She also wrote for the South Coloradan, and was awarded 'Best Sports Series of the 2007/2008 Year'.
