Community welcome to Science Saturdays (10-22-2009)

The Zacheis Planetarium and Science Activity Center, on the northside of the Community Partnerships Building, are hosting a series of Science Saturdays beginning Nov. 14. Over the course of the academic year, Science Saturdays will include group activities involving biology, geology, chemistry and robotics. Everyone, especially children, is welcome to visit the Center on these Science Saturdays. Parents must stay with children under the age of 12 for safety reasons.

During these open-houses, from 9 a.m. to noon, visitors are invited to experience hands-on science activities in one of two formats. Emeritus Professor of Physics Dr. Randy Emmons is coordinating the events.

A common group activity will begin at 9 a.m. on a variety of topics. The first session will emphasize basic electronics and engage participants in building simple timing circuits as an introduction to robotics. In the second session, Nov. 21, participants will learn about lenses and mirrors, and construction of optical devices such as microscopes and telescopes.

The second class of activity is purely open exploration. The center will have equipment available for use. Initially, this resource will be limited; on Nov.14, microscopes interfaced to computers available. On Nov. 21, besides the microscopes, materials will be available for the construction of small roller-coasters. As additional activities are developed for the K-12 outreach, these activities will also be made available for open explorations. Visitors may come at any time between 9 a.m. and noon and use the equipment to explore in their own directions.
