Sustainability action and awareness (09-30-08)

City helps campus recycle

Thanks to the efforts of EARTH, ASC's sustainability group, bulk recycle bins from the City of Alamosa are now available on the north side of the student apartments on Sunset St. There are separate containers for

EARTH work-study students will continue to pick up recyclable materials and take them to the new bins. If you have recyclable items you'd like to take yourself, please carefully sort them into the proper bins. DO NOT THROW TRASH INTO THE BINS.

In addition, several EARTH members constructed two sheds and four barrels for recycling that are located by the dumpsters on the south end of Faculty Drive and the dumpsters at the north end of the student apartments.

A Habitat for Humanity "Can Cottage" is located south of Computing Services, a good central location. Thanks go to Facilities Services for helping establish these reycycling sites.

River clean-up with EARTH

EARTH is organizing a trash pick-up along the Rio Grande as part of the ASC Cares Day Community Plunge. Sat., Oct. 4. EARTH will also decorate and outfit more outdoor recycle barrels for the campus and the community. For more info on getting involved, contact Dr. Marty Jones.

All are welcome to join EARTH's sustainability efforts by attending the next meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 7, at noon in the Student Life Center of the SUB.

Recycled Products Expo

Community Partnerships will host a Recycled Products Expo, Nov. 13-15, to highlight creative uses of recycled materials on campus. Also in the works is the preparation of a waste quilt, with patches made from materials that can't currently be recycled in Alamosa (e.g., lids from plastic containers, chipboard, glass). The intent of this project is to educate children/students/community members about what we throw away and hopefully to change some purchasing habits.

Recycle the techno-trash

ASC Community Partnerships has purchased three "technotrash" boxes that can be filled with unwanted electronic/computer items that will be sent to a company for recycling. NOTE: large monitors, etc., should go to Computing Services. Instead, fill the technotrash boxes with old diskettes, mice, keyboards, etc. Read more.

Conservation in the (reusable) bag

An ASC reusable bag was incorporated into one of Professor Roger Eriksen's artworks at the ASC Art faculty show. Watch a video by Miles Eddy, Community Partnerships, featuring Prof. Eriksen.

Community Partnerships and EARTH have sold 1,000 ASC reusable bags, and more are on order. EARTH members have been selling the bags at the Farmers' Market in Alamosa every Saturday.

The bags are 100% biodegradable cotton and fair trade. When used at City Market in Alamosa, a small rebate goes back to ASC Community Partnerships & EARTH for environmental projects.

The bags may be purchased at City Market in Alamosa, the Alamosa Food Co-Op, ASC Bookstore, ASC Community Partnerships and the Farmers' Market
