Students of Concern trained on risk management (09-30-08)
Brett Sokolow, J.D., President of the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM), presented a one-day training on assessing risk behavior for the Students of Concerns committee. Sokolow is a specialist in campus safety, security and high-risk student health and safety issues. Also a higher education attorney, he has published 10 books and more than 50 articles on student affairs and risk management topics.
ASC's Students of Concern group meets biweekly to provide early intervention for students who are struggling mentally, emotionally, or behaviorally.
Members of the group include: Ken Marquez, Dean of Student Affairs; Dr. Joel Shults, Chief of Police; Gregg Elliott, director of the Counseling Center; Masood Ahmad, director of Student Engagement & Success; Brian Rauscher, director of Student Support Services; Dr. Frank Novotny, associate provost for academic affairs; Angelica Gallegos, director of Upward Bound; Bruce Deltondo, director of Auxiliary Services; and Dr. Kim Kelso, Chair of the Department of Psychology. ASC's attorney, Nancy Wahl, also attended the training.
