Accomplishments

Dr. James Bedard, assistant professor of biology, with fellow researchers Shuyun Wang and Stephanie M. Ware wrote a chapter of the upcoming book, "Focus on Zinc Finger Protein Research," 2009, Editor: Kenichi Yoshida, by Research Signpost. The chapter reviews "Structure-function analyses of the ZIC family of zinc finger transcription factors."

Patricia Bryson, Institutional Research analyst, received her Bachelor of Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Anthropology from Excelsior College in New York on Aug. 21.

Dr. Joyce M. Centofanti, associate professor of art, was included in the juried exhibit, Clay Continuum 4, at the SPACe Gallery in La Veta, CO, from Aug.11- Sept. 11. Her ceramic sculpture, "The Weberi, Sweet Grass Hills, MT. U.S.A.," won second place.

Karen Lemke, STAY Coordinator, will present a paper titled "Becoming College Material: STAY (STRUCTURED TRANSITIONAL ACADEMIC YEAR) for underprepared college students, comprehensive pre-collegiate programming" at the International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI 2009) in Madrid, Spain, November 16-18. More than 500 delegates from 65 different countries are expected to attend the conference.

Ed Lyell, professor of business, presents a monthly radio show, Economic Mortar, on KRZA. The half-hour call-in show runs the second Thursday of each month at 8:30 a.m., repeated again at 7:30 p.m. The programs covers a current economic issue each month, such as causes of economic collapse, health care reform, etc. It is also available via KRZA's website.

The sport science research project conducted by Ben Kern, head strength coach, and Dr. Tracey Robinson, assoc. professor of HPPE, was discussed in the August issue of "Muscle and Fitness" by author and lead science editor Dr. Jim Stoppani. The project results are up for publication in the "Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research" (published by the National Strength and Conditioning Assoc.)

Dana Provence, assoc. professor of art, had a sculpture selected by a jury for the Art of the Dunes Exhibition at the Denver International Airport, which runs until January 10. The sculpture is an interpretation of an earthwork drawing Provence created in the Land Art class he taught in the summer of 2008.

Dr. Aida Sahud, director of the nursing program, was accepted as a Fellow for The Bighorn Leadership Conference which took place in Glenwood Springs, Aug. 28-30. The second half of the conference will take place Oct. 9-10. The purpose is for participants to write a bill as if it were going to be presented to the State of Colorado's Legislature for something related to health care policy, access, workforce and many other health care options.

President David Svaldi was a panelist at the Sept. 16 Day at National Science Foundation for Presidents of small minority institutions to establish the "Quality Education for Minorities network." He made a presentation on the Strengths and Challenges of STEM programs at ASC.

Also, Svaldi's opinion piece, "Small Colleges in Small Towns Rock," appears in the recently published book, "Small Town Sexy, the allure of living in small town America," by Kim Huston, an economic developer. "Small Town Sexy," ISBN: 978-0-9822201-4-6, is available through The Clark Group.

Dr. John Taylor, professor of theatre, attended The Illumination Project's Summer Institute at Portland Community College in Oregon. He was one of 25 individuals selected to participate in the workshop which was funded by a Ford Foundation Difficult Dialogues grant. Taylor's trip was funded by the award he won as a 2009 ASC Presidential Scholar. Read more.

Dr. Grace Young, professor of sociology, through her volunteer work as a grants writer for the High Valley Community Center, helped make possible the group's acquisition of a facility on Main Street in Del Norte to house their programs. Her grant applications garnered capital funds in the amount of $42,000 and support in the amount of $40,000 for community programs for seniors, children, and families.
