CAPP is live

(09-16-2009)

The Records Office announces that the electronic advising and planning tool, Curriculum Advising & Program Planning (CAPP), is now accessible via the faculty web for use by undergraduate faculty and advisors.

CAPP allows faculty and advisors to run a "What-if Analysis" to determine which courses within the student's current degree program have and have not been satisfied, as well as to see how many courses are lacking in alternate degree programs.

"We foresee that CAPP will become an advisor's best friend and the most sought-after tool for keeping our students on track to degree completion," said Records Evaluator Belen Maestas.

"Bringing this product to fruition was not an easy endeavor," Maestas said. "It took a great deal of reading, testing, and clean-up. This was a product no one on campus had the expertise with. The fact that we are now able to make it available to the faculty and advisors is a direct reflection of the tenacity and dedication of our Records Evaluator/CAPP Administrator, Danielle Smith. Our student system programmer, Michael Rael continues to be instrumental in helping to identify problems, as is the rest of the BANNER team, particularly David Peasley and Robert Mulqueen."

Smith has been working with department chairs to reduce the likelihood of erroneous or missing program requirements. She will be requesting training time during regularly scheduled department meetings to familiarize department personnel with CAPP. She will also offer general sessions a few times during the semester for faculty who may have missed these training opportunities. Because CAPP has a very user-friendly and intuitive interface, faculty may go to the faculty web site and see it themselves. Click on the Degree Evaluation link via the Advisor menu option under the Faculty Services menu item after logging in through portal. Note: After selecting a student and a major, submit the info to the "What-if Analysis" link.

For now, CAPP is available only to faculty and advisors, but plans call for releasing it to students in about a year's time. We would like to ensure the product is as error-free as possible for the student release, fall 2010. Plans also call for incorporation of graduate programs.

CAPP-related questions may be directed to Danielle Smith, ext.7321.
