Using RSS (10-28-05)

What is this and why would I care?

Looking for an easy way to keep up with head lines from web sites you frequent? Then Really Simple Syndication, (RSS) is for you.

OK, what is RSS?

RSS is an open standard file format used to share information from on line news and weblog sites. The RSS standard is maintained by an advisory board at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. Recently it has become popular to use RSS to offer the latest news via audio and video in addition to text, this new practice is called Podcasting.

How do I use RSS?

Many programs are available called news aggregators providing humans with easy maintenance of multiple RSS sources. Here I will walk through examples using both the Mozilla Firefox web browser, and the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. I will subscribe to news feeds for the ASC Portal and ASC News web sites. These examples will just scratch the surface of using RSS to simplify, (or complicate), your life.

Add the ASC Portal RSS to Firefox

Add ASC News RSS to Thunderbird
