Course Description: Get special, first-hand access to robust, dynamic Mars NASA imagery and data from orbiters, rovers and many other missions. Use it to teach Earth science! Learn how to access and utilize all of Mars current data and imagery as guest presenters from NASA share cutting-edge Mars research. Search for water, volcanoes, and more as you document your journey while making connections to Earth and space science. This course teaches the following standards-based topics: Earth & Space Science; Physical & Science & Chemistry; and Science Process Skills. Sessions focus on: Water on Mars and Changes on the Martian Surface Over Time; and Volcanoes on Mars and the similarities with Earth. You will receive access to a comprehensive web-based resource center on Mars data, extensive curriculum for K-12 classrooms, and simple-to-use viewer to import 3D-Mars data.

Course Description: Engage students with the spaceflight of Mission Specialist and educator Barbara Morgan! The course introduces new NASA-sponsored classroom activities designed to accompany human space exploration. You will receive lesson plans for middle and high school, and a resource page with key links for the classroom integrating the elements of the course with science content.

Course Description: Explore the ocean using innovative instructional tools and activities. Participants will learn the importance of the ocean to our home planet, as they analyze and utilize the Ocean Literacy Essential Principals and Fundamental Concepts. Using inquiry-based modules developed on a theme of ocean exploration, participants will learn how to ultimately make their students more ocean-literate. Guest presentations by ocean researchers show how scientists and educators are working together to bring the ocean into the classroom. This course teaches the following standards-based topics: Earth Science, Life Science, and Science Process Skills. Course Description: Follow marine animals in real-time (including polar bear!) and apply life and Earth science topics to the ocean. Learn how students become bathymetry, phytoplankton and sea surface experts as topics such as global climate change come alive. Image interpretation of the ocean makes the connection to marine animal movement and related conservation issues.

Course Description: Track dozens of birds and land animals all over the world and explain their movement on top of NASA satellite imagery! Learn how standards-based content topics and satellite image interpretation interweave with animal migrations and movement. This course teaches the following standards-based topics: Earth Science, Life Science, and Science Process Skills. The four live sessions will focus on: Animal Movement and Geography; Animal Movement with Seasonal Change; Weather and Analysis of Animal with Earth Data; and Misconceptions in Science related to Animals. You will receive access to a real-time tracking of marine animals and links to appropriate student research.

Course Description: Learn research-based methods of science pedagogy including inquiry, constructivism and overcoming misconceptions. Examine elements of theory and practice for teaching, learning, and assessing science in engaging contexts and using technology as a tool for effective instruction. This course is designed for practicing science teachers who will explore connections between their particular teaching settings to reform-based recommendations in science pedagogy.
-Explain the importance of science to the intellectual development of all children.
-Describe, compare, and implement a variety of pedagogical strategies, including assessment strategies that will enable students to learn science.
-Utilize a variety of resources for effective science instruction.
-Conduct long-term scientific observations and draw conclusions from them.
-Develop science lessons based on reform-based recommendations, i.e. constructivism, inquiry, and science literacy.

Course Description: Is there life out there? NASA's Astro-Venture, developed by educators and scientists at NASA AMES, allows students to take on the roles of NASA scientists to search for and design a planet that could be habitable to humans and other life forms. Participants learn how to facilitate the programs inquiry-based modules to apply science content in upper elementary, middle and high school. A guest speaker from NASA will discuss past and current missions in Astrobiology. This course teaches Earth & Space Science; Physical Science; and Life Science. The four live sessions focus on and Introduction to Astrobiology; Astronomy; Atmospheric Science & Geology; and Biology & Pedagogical Considerations. You will receive a complete Educator Guide with lesson plans, links to misconception research, rubrics and other assessments, ideas for differentiation, as well as a comprehensive web-based resource center on Astrobiology!

Course Description: Make the connection between Sun and Earth using exciting, simple-to-understand NASA data. Abrupt changes on the Sun create flares and coronal mass ejections, blasting powerful solar storms into space. NASA satellites predict these storms and protect astronauts and power grids. Use simple-to-follow data in your classroom to promote inquiry as students analyze NASA information. Topics include magnetic fields, solar structure, orbits, magnetism, light and more!

SCED 589 Physical Science in Motion: Classroom Applications (Target grades 5-12) (click to register)

Course Description: Participants use simple software simulations. Physical science activities focus on relationships between gravity, friction, aerodynamic principles and energy. Three free simple-to-use software programs from NASA Glenn are featured and: 1) control the shape, size, and inclina¬tion of the airfoil and atmospheric conditions in which you are flying; 2) teach aerodynamics by controlling the conditions of a big league baseball pitch (speed, spin, etc&); and 3) model the design and testing of jet engines, flight conditions, and engine size. Applications to force and motion are another focus. The software and material will teach concepts simply, visually and in an exciting manner.

Course Description: One of the best ways to understand the Nature of Science is to participate in the authentic scientific process. This course is a supervised internship in which students will work with practicing scientists and/or engineers to experience the inquiry and design processes and to consider applications to the classroom. Students will work closely with both the course instructor and internship supervisor to develop a project that best fits the program outcomes.

Course Description: NASA content for young engineers promotes problem solving and critical thinking skills. Course Description: Current weather data and imagery increases performance in mathematics. Focus is on measurement, fractions, number sense, data collection, and analysis. Math activities prepare students for their state examination.
