About the Program

Picture Yourself as a Counselor!

The Department of Counselor Education offers M.A. programs in school counseling, clinical mental health counseling and student affairs emphasis. These programs are accredited by The Higher Learning Commission, CACREP, and the Colorado Department of Education.

The MA degree in counseling is a 60-hour program. Students may complete the program by attending the full-time program, one of the off-campus programs, part-time evening program, or the online program.

State licensure is available for those seeking school counseling licensure and the state academic requirements in Colorado are met for those seeking to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.

These programs are designed to provide the human relations and therapeutic skills necessary to become a professional counselor. Four general goals are necessary to develop the mature and professionally competent counselor: (1) personal growth, (2) development of a broad knowledge of counseling theory & research, (3) development of individual & group counseling skills and (4) knowledge of auxiliary services and follow-up.

Full-time Program

This program is for the full-time student. Students usually begin this program in the fall semester and complete the program through 5 consecutive semesters, including summer (Available in the On-Campus Program only).

Off-Campus Program

Students may attend one of the campus sites where ASC offers the Counseling Program. These programs are specially designed to meet the needs of working professional. Cohort are offered in Durango, Grand Junction, and Pueblo.

Online Plus Program

The online program is developed to meet the educational needs of those students who are not within driving distance of a counseling program or whose work schedule will not allow physical attendance. The online program has the exact course content as the other accredited programs ASC offers, only in an online format. Two one week summer residency intensives on campus are required.

Internet Courses

A selection of internet courses are offered by the program to supplement the regular courses. These courses are in conjunction with the program plan of completion.
