ASC Theatre Presents Powerful Examination of Good and Evil (04-20-07)

Dan Durkin rehearses his role as professor John Halder in Adams State Theatre's upcoming production of Good, which opens April 20 in the Main Stage Theatre.

The Adams State Theatre program's final production of the school year promises to be an entertaining and gripping evening of theater. Good is a drama with music that depicts a humanities professor, a "good" man, who becomes increasingly involved with the Nazis in 1938 Germany. Through scenes, songs, and music, the play tells the story of professor John Halder, his Jewish friend Maurice, and his circle of family and friends who become part of the terror and horror of the Nazi's Final Solution.

Directed by Dr. Paul S. Newman, professor of theater, the production examines individual moral courage in the face of injustice, immorality, and the banality of evil. "Although it is set in 1938 Germany, the theme is as contemporary as any play we've ever done," Newman said. "In any time period including the present, the play argues we must continually question what is good and bad and the role of individual responsibility to take a stand against evil."

The production uses a theatrical approach to staging that heightens its dramatic impact. Accompanied by an orchestra positioned on stage as part of the action, actors sing popular songs from the 1930s as a comment on the action before them.

"And the entire cast is constantly in view, so Good becomes presented in a style that will allow our audience to examine critically these characters' choices," Newman said.

"This production has been a spectacular challenge for me and for my cast and musicians," Newman said. "I'm extremely proud of our actors' training and creativity in our rehearsals. The result of our work will be an exceptionally engaging production that will captivate our audiences."

Performances are April 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 8 p.m., April 24 and 25 at noon, and April 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, and free for AS&F. This production is recommended for mature audiences only. Call 587-TIXX (8499) for reservations.
