Ooh, La, La, French is offered at Adams State (12-07-07)

The Adams State College Languages Program will offer first year French in the spring semester. The class will meet from 1 p.m. until 2:40 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

The course will provide students with basic grammar and conversation skills that will serve as a solid foundation for pursuing further French language studies. Strong emphasis will be placed on the cultures of the various French-speaking regions and countries around the world.

The French instructor, Zlata Novakov, was born in Serbia but grew up in Toronto. She said French is one of the official languages in Canada. "I began studying French at the age of nine," she said. "Languages have always been a large part of my life and I initially began to formally study them because of my love for travel."

Novakov received her bachelor's degree in French and Spanish language and literature from the University of British Columbia, Canada. "After receiving my BA, I moved to Barcelona, Spain for one year to complete a post-graduate program in audio-visual translation, with a focus on movie subtitling," she said. "My teaching experience includes French language instruction in Veracruz, Mexico and English language instruction in Barcelona and Veracruz."

Before moving to the New Mexico with her husband, she lived and worked in Montreal. "I currently work as a free-lance translator (French, Spanish and German into English)," Novakov said. "I am very excited to be teaching at Adams State."
