ASC Theatre has romance for Valentine season (01-30-08)

Experience the awakening. The Adams State College Theatre Department is producing two one-act plays for Valentine's Week. "Miller's Point" written by Evan Bridenstine, and "The Love Talker," written by Deborah Pryor, open at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, on the Xperimental Stage in the Theatre Building. The show continues nightly at 8 p.m. through Feb. 16. Tickets are $7 for general admission, $6 for seniors and students, and free to Adams State Associated Students and Faculty. Call 719-587-TIXX for reservations.

Senior theater majors, Rachel Cohen-Birzer and Elizabeth Wellman, are directing "Miller's Point" and "The Love Talker," respectively. "There is a little bit of everything," Wellman said. "Rachel's production is a happy love story, and mine is sad. They are a perfect pairing of one-acts for Valentine's Day."

The directors said the shows are geared toward adult women, especially college-age women.

"I really feel it is important for women's stories to be told," Wellman said. "I hope they are inspirational. "The Love Talker" is about how scary it can be a woman growing up - scary, but a good thing too."

Cohen-Birzer said "Miller’s Point" is a drama. "The play has a happy ending," she said. "It ends in romance."

The two said they have worked very well together. "We are both on the same page," Cohen-Birzer said. "We are so connected and want the same things from our shows."

Both plays have seasoned actors and new faces. "The experienced actors are anchoring the show," Wellman said. "The shows have a great cast."

Cohen-Birzer said she will become the house manager for the Aurora Fox Theater after graduation in May, and Wellman said she plans on pursuing a master's in dramatic theory and eventually receiving her Ph.D.

The show's content is for mature audiences only.
