Free tax service to qualifying individuals

(01-18-2012)

For the third year, Adams State College School of Business, Trinidad State Junior College Valley Campus, and The Piton Foundation are providing free tax service to qualifying individuals starting January 28. If your family's income is under $49,000, IRS-certified students at Adams State can save you hundreds of dollars you'd pay to file, and make sure you get all the tax credits you're due.

This year sites include Adams State campus; TSJC Valley Campus; Alamosa Senior Center, by appointment; Costilla County Public Health in San Luis, by appointment; Tri-County Senior Center in Monte Vista, by appointment; and High Valley Community Center in Del Norte, by appointment.

Adams State's free tax site is open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. every Saturday from January 28 through April 14; and 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the School of Business Building lobby, Third St. and Richardson Ave. This site will be closed March 10 through March 17 for spring break and Saturday’s hours will change from 9 a.m. until noon starting March 24.

The TSJC Valley Campus room 216, located at 1011 Main St., is open from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. every Wednesday from February 1 through March 14; and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, March 10.

The Alamosa Senior Center, 92 Colorado Ave., will offer free tax services by appointment from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wednesdays, February 1 through March 28, call 719-589-3277 to schedule an appointment.

Services are available at the Costilla County Public Health, located at 233 Main St., in San Luis, call 719-672-3332 to schedule an appointment.

If you make less than about $49,000 and have children at home, the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit can reduce the income tax you pay and may even mean you get a bigger refund--as much as $5,000 or more! Plus, there are tax credits available for saving for retirement, paying for college, and buying a first home.

Make sure to bring the following documents with you to the tax site:

· All W-2, 1099s and other income-related documents.

· Proof of mortgage interest, property taxes, daycare payments, college education expenses, charitable contributions and all other tax-deductible expenses.

· Social Security Cards for all family members.

· A copy of last year’s tax return, if available.

· Bank account number and routing number to direct deposit your refund. With direct deposits, refunds are received in 7–10 days.
