Local students score above average in national mathematic competition (03-28-07)

Twenty-six students from San Luis Valley high schools participated in the American Mathematics Competitions on Feb. 21 at Adams State College. There were two competitions, one for students in 12th grade or below (AMC12) and one for students in 10th grade or below (AMC10). These competitions, sponsored nationally by the Mathematical Association of America, and locally by Adams State, attracted 33,489 and 24,008 competitors, respectively.

On the AMC12 the local winner was Megan Emmons, from Del Norte High School, who scored 91.5, as compared to the national average of 73.1.

On the AMC10 there was a tie for the winner. Tyler Mondragon and Kaylee Sowards, from Centauri High School, scored 72, as compared to the national average of 61.5.

Dr. Steve Aldrich, Adams State College assistant professor of mathematics, organized the event. "Congratulations to the winners and many thanks to all of this year's participants."

Anyone interested in participating in the 2008 competitions, which will be held on Feb. 27, 2008, should contact Steve Aldrich at 719-587-7487 or email saldrich@adams.edu.
