Adams State College awards 25 degrees in ceremonies at OJC (05-19-05)
Adams State College, in partnership with Otero Junior College, recognized 25 graduates on May 14 who had completed bachelor and master's degrees through the Adams State College Distance Learning Program.
Under this unique program, students can transfer their first two years of community college course work from Otero Junior College to Adams State College to complete a four-year baccalaureate degree program in selected majors. Once the baccalaureate degree is completed, students then have the option of pursuing a master's degree through Adams State for selected disciplines.
According to Debbie Phillips, Adams State College site coordinator at OJC, students are able to obtain a degree without leaving their family or community. "Courses are offered at OJC in the evening and on the weekends. Most of the students completed their degrees while working around full-time jobs and family," said Phillips.
During graduation ceremonies held in the Ed Stafford Theatre, Dr. Georgia Grantham, assistant provost for the Adams State College Extended Campus, gave the address and talked about the program ideals and progress since its inception in 2000.
Otero Junior College President Jim Rizzuto commended the graduates for their commitment and dedication. Also acknowledged were the families who supported each of the students throughout their course work. "The family support system is a key ingredient in helping these students accomplished their goals," said Grantham.
Graduates were introduced by Dr. Grantham with Dr. Sandra Starnaman, chief academic and assessment officer for the ASC Extended Campus, presenting each graduate with their diploma. The ASC Alumni Association also presented each graduate with an ASC alumni t-shirt. A reception was held following the ceremony at the OJC Humanities Center.
