ASC students enjoy trip to Japan (11-30-07)
Sharon McCoy, Colette Guiberteau, Paulette Wagner, and Takako "Kathy" Clark
Surrounded by Japanese art and collectables and treated to a Japanese meal, interested Adams State College students, faculty, and staff, and community members gathered to listen to the adventures of two travelers, Mira Weisskickler, class of 2009, and Sharon McCoy, graduate from the class of 1997 and 2002, speak about their adventures across the ocean. They traveled with Takako "Kathy" Clark, instructor of Japanese, who organized a trip to Japan last spring.
Weissickler said she is not fluent in Japanese and is a vegetarian, therefore, traveling with the group and translator was a big asset. "If the people in Japan knew even one word of English, they would do their best to help you," she said. "Throughout my many experiences in Japan, the hospitality of the people stands out."
She said the free days in Kyotos and Tokyo were among her favorite experiences. "A friend and I purchased day passes for the city train in Tokyo," Weissickler said. "We got off and on at random areas. We felt immersed in the culture. It was a fantastic experience."
McCoy agreed with Weissikcler regarding the hospitality of the Japanese. "I set out on my own to find a bank one morning," McCoy said. "Although I got lost, the first people I asked for directions went out of their way to guide me back to the hotel."
The basis for McCoy's desire to tour Japan was from an artistic viewpoint. "I can't believe I was there for 11 days," McCoy said. "We got to see so much – shrines and temples, as an artist it was exciting for me to visit shops, museums and even homes filled with traditional Japanese art."
Paulette Wagner and Collette Guiberteau also traveled with the group. "Japan is a beautiful country," Wagner said. "It is very clean with friendly people. To see Mt. Fuji through the clouds was a real treat."
Clark is organizing another trip to Japan in the spring of 2008. The group will leave for Japan on May 19 and return May 30. Travelers have the option of taking the trip for three Adams State credits.
"I was spoiled," McCoy said. "I roomed with Kathy and she was amazing. She is the best guide."
