Women and their guns is final 2009 Adams State free faculty lecture

(11-30-2009)

The Adams State College Faculty Lecture Series final presentation for the semester, "Women and Gun Ownership" by Cindy Whitney, assistant professor of sociology, begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, in Porter Hall (the science building) room 130. The event is free and open to the public.

When asked about women shooters the two names most commonly mentioned are Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane. Even with this history, women shooters are still often considered an anomaly. The lecture will examine gendered pathways to gun ownership by women by looking at the history of women shooters in the United States. Of primary interest is how women shooters often work to reproduce gender in their role as gun owners.

All talks are free and the public is invited. Complimentary light refreshments will be offered. For further information on the series of lectures, contact Dr. Robert Astalos, assistant professor of physics, at 719-587-7821, or by email: rjastalos@adams.edu.
