ASC Cloyde Snook Gallery welcomes back past faculty (09-19-07)
The Adams State College Cloyde Snook Gallery exhibit Past, Present, Future features art pieces from former art faculty and present professors. The exhibit will opens with a reception from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in the Art Building. The show will continue through Oct. 12.
Curated by Emeritus Professor Cloyde Snook and Gallery Director Professor Eugene Schilling, this special exhibition showcases the work of faculty who have taught and are teaching at Adams State College.
"Starting in 1931 with Ms. Ione Page, the Art Department faculty have been, to say the least, a very talented and interesting group," Schilling said. "This will be the first time a retrospective of this magnitude has been put together at ASC." Over seventy-two works will be shown including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, fiber, installation, etc. Also included in the exhibit is a timeline, which documents the faculty from 1931 to 2007 in photographs and articles.
Forty-six artists are represented, including work from 1939 by Clifford B. West and new works by present faculty. Other highlights include works by Steven Quiller 1982-90, Paul Williams 1952-84, Roger Williams 1984, Margaret Prosser Allen 1940-42, James Hatfield 1942-77, Sister Mary Lavey 1978-93, Ed Clemmer 1975-96, William "Rocky" Sapp 1967-73, and Bill Wightman 96-2000.
The reception is cosponsored by the office of Alumni Relations and will take place during homecoming weekend.
Two special films will be shown after the reception from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 pm in room 227 in the Art Building. These films by Clifford B. West 1940 - 42, were made after he left ASC and document artists and art in Europe. The films are entitled, "Bronze: River of Metal" and "Edvard Munch: Paintings." They are on loan from his wife and the AVA Gallery and Art Center.
"'Past, Present, Future' represents the faculty who have shaped and will shape the department and its commitment to students," Schilling said. "Whether they taught for one year or thirty, the Art Department faculty will always be an important part of Adams State College."
A student exhibit, Sculpture and Metals, will be in the Hatfield Gallery during the same time frame.
The galleries hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information contact the Art Department at 719-587-7823.
