Expert on seed saving and acequias will speak on Sept. 17 at Adams State (09-10-08)

Miguel Santistevan, will speak on "Agricultural Traditions in the San Luis Valley: the conservation of crops, ranching, and the environment," at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Carson Auditorium located in the Student Union Building on the Adams State College campus. The talk is free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Santistevan is a doctoral student at the University of New Mexico in biology. His research interest is in crop diversity and agriculture ecology of the acequia and dryland agricultural systems in northern New Mexico and the greater Southwest.

He is the youth mentor and radio producer for a project for The New Mexico Acequia Association called Sembrando Semillas. Santistevan is certified in Permaculture and ZERI Design and is actively involved in agriculture and environmental education for schools and land restoration efforts. Santistevan owns Sol Feliz, an experimental seed-saving farm in Taos, NM.

Santistevan has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from UNM and a master's in ecology form the University of California, Davis. For more information on acequias activities visit the web at www.lasacequias.org.

Following Santistevan's talk is a poetry reading in the Student Life Center, located in the Student Union Building, all ages are welcome and free refreshments will be served.

The Fifth Annual Autumn@Adams theme, "Our Earth-Our Valley/Tierra Nuestra-Nuestro Valle" is dedicated to honoring and promoting the agricultural heritage of sustainable rural living in the San Luis Valley through inspiration and education.
