Film examines the determination of one young woman to succeed despite the odds (09-01-2009)
Transformations can take a variety of forms, for Liz Murray, it was personal choice in regards to the direction of her future. As part of the sixth annual Adams State College Autumn@Adams celebration, Murray's story will be told in the film "Homeless to Harvard" at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the ES Building room 103. The event is free and open to the public.
Based on a true story, the film, first shown on Lifetime, is based on Murray's young life. Raised by drug-addicted parents, she becomes homeless at 15 when her mother dies of AIDS. This personal tragedy becomes the turning point in Murray's life as she finishes high school and is accepted to Harvard.
Following the film, Jennifer McQuitty, Valerie Serna, and Enrique Guerrero, will speak on obstacles and challenges they too have overcome to become successful members of society.
The Autumn@Adams theme, "Transformations Begin Here/Las Transformaciones Empiezan Aqui" is a forum to celebrate the creative impulse toward change. Events are scheduled from September 12 through September 18 and include celebrating Darwin's legacy, a cook-off, a discussion on evolution and grace, poetry, art and music.
