Club Sports

Welcome

On behalf of Adams State College we are pleased to announce the addition of Climbing, Ski Mountaineering, and Mountain Biking in our Department of Student Life and Recreation.  Our campus is centrally located between the Monarch, Taos, and Wolf Creek Ski Resorts. In addition for our Climbing Team and Mountain Bikers, Penitente Canyon offers world class rock climbing in a natural outdoor setting as well as some of the nations best training trails for mountain biking.

Our top-quality coaching, sports medicine, and training and conditioning staff encourage our athletes to perform to the best of their abilities, both on the field and in the classroom. Resistance training for injury prevention and improved performance is an important part of the ASC athletic experience and is maintained in both in-season and off-season programs.

The Department of Student Life and Recreation has developed programming for athletes to encourage sportsmanship and leadership. Because so many of life’s lessons can be learned through athletic participation, this is a natural place for us to teach our students the importance of integrity, courage, compassion, respect, responsibility, and honesty--the core virtues expressed in our professional programs.

Climbing Team

The Adams State Climbing Team competes in the Collegiate Climbing Series (CCS) sponsored by USA Climbing. As a team (previously as a club) ASC has been ranked 2nd in the region for two years, and has taken 1st in the 2011 regional competition in Colorado Springs, CO. The ASC Climbing Team continually achieving new heights we are currently ranked 12th in the nation on the CCS National Circuit.

    Ski Mountaineering Team

Ski Mountaineering is a form of ski touring that combines uphill climbing with downhill skiing performance. Skiers use a special binding that allows their heel freedom of movement while moving uphill and can lock the heel down for the descent. Racers use special ‘skin’ that is adhered to the bottom of the ski and can grip the snow for the ascent. Ski Mountaineering is an endurance sport which requires black diamond skiing ability. In the U.S. ski mountaineering is quickly gaining interest with 19 races scheduled for the 2011/12 winter season. 10 of these races are located in Colorado. There are currently 82 competitors in the San Juan’s. With the Sangre’s to our east and the San Juan’s to our west Alamosa is in prime location for ski mountaineering. Adams State is pleased to offer the first and only collegiate ski mountaineering team in the USA.

      Mountain Biking Team

High school mountain bike leagues have developed quickly over the last few years. Its our pleasure to announce the Adams State Mountain Biking Team. The National Interscholastic Cycling Association now hosts races in California, Texas, Colorado, Minnesota, Utah and Washington state. Organizing through USA Cycling, ASC Club Sports is now pleased to bring a mountain bike team to this collegiate institution. There are currently 35 teams in the Colorado including Adams State and 32 teams in Texas. California had over 1000 individual racers in their two leagues last year.
