Adams State classes resume March 31 (03-28-08)

Adams State College classes will resume Monday, March 31, in the wake of a successful Stage 1 disinfection of the Alamosa municipal water system, announced Adams State President, Dr. David Svaldi.

"Adams State has taken all the proper steps to ensure a safe environment for returning students, in cooperation with public health officials and local and federal agencies," Svaldi explained.

City of Alamosa officials expect to shift into Stage 2, Yellow Alert, on Saturday, when chlorine concentration levels drop from approximately 25 parts per million to approximately 10 parts per million. Brief showers will be permitted during this stage, but only bottled water should be consumed. DO NOT MOVE INTO STAGE 2 PRACTICES UNTIL RECEIVING A NOTICE FROM THE CITY. These will be distributed door-to -door and via the reverse 911 phone system. Officials say the Stage 2 alert could last up to 10 days, but may last longer, depending on results of the chlorination treatment.

Svaldi noted the campus food service, operated by Sodexho, is fully operational according to regulations of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

"We want to emphasize to our students, faculty, and staff that they need to stay hydrated. We have plenty of free water available from a bulk tank located between Girault Hall and the Student Union Building," Svaldi said.

Anyone interested in volunteering in the community notification effort on Saturday is asked to contact the American Red Cross at 1-719-587-3314.

Representatives from Adams State College, Alamosa School District, and Trinidad State Junior College will meet with city officials this weekend to prepare for smooth reopening of all schools and classes on Monday.

Adams State is providing meals and lodging to the National Guard troops that have been deployed to assist with water distribution throughout the city.
