Adams State now in "Stage Yellow" of water usage (03-31-08)

Adams State College was notified by City of Alamosa officials the shift into Stage 2, Yellow Alert, has begun in most areas of the city including the college campus.

The chlorine concentration levels have dropped from approximately 25 parts per million to approximately 10 parts per million. Brief showers will be permitted during this stage, but only bottled water should be consumed. Along with brief showers, the city released information late Sunday evening that other uses of water are acceptable, including clothes washing, and cautionary hand washing.

The campus community must use caution when using tap water. Citizens sensitive to chlorine, including young children, should avoid contact with city water during stage 2 process.

Bottled water must still be used for drinking, tooth brushing, food preparation and recipes, vegetable and fruit washing, and manual utensil and equipment washing, rinsing, and sanitizing. If you are not sure, use bottled water instead of tap water.

Adams State College is providing water for consumption for all members of the campus community including students, faculty and staff. The "bladder" containing the potable water is located between the Student Union Building and Girault Hall, containers are available.

Salmonella symptoms can include diarrhea, sometimes bloody, stomach cramps, fever, and vomiting. Adults and children returning to work, school, or daycare should be free of the above symptoms for 24 hours or more.

The Adams State academic council will decide later this afternoon how to make-up for the three lost days of classes.

The complete release from the City of Alamosa is available here.
