Cost Saving Tips for TravelAny tips found on this link are just that - tips, suggestions, options to consider, thinking outside of the box, etc. Some may offer cost savings, some may not, depending on where you are going, when, how far in advance you are able to plan, and so forth. They have been used though, and have resulted in a cost savings. If you have any suggestions, that could be added to the list, please email them to me and I may add them to the list, for others to read.
* Use a rental vehicle instead of a personal vehicle - depending on where you are going, the number of miles to be driven, and the number of days you will be gone, a rental vehicle may offer a savings over using a personal vehicle. (ex: a one day trip north of Gunnison cost $72.43 for a rental vehicle and gas, if personal miles were used the reimbursement would have been $178.00, the department saved $105.57 on this trip. Not every trip will have savings this big, but it's worth checking out.) Admissions has been using rental vehicles for the past few years, and is very happy with the results. (A State Travel Card is needed for a rental vehicle - see the Rental Vehicle link, for more info.)
* One-Way car rental with Hertz - as an alternative to driving a personal vehicle to Denver or any other airport, parking at the airport (or even offsite), then driving back from the airport, use a rental car, drop it off at the Hertz location near the airport, take their shuttle to the airport, go on your trip and when you return, pick up another car for the return trip back to Alamosa. You would pay for two one-day car rentals, plus gas instead of round-trip personal miles and parking fees.
