ED 589 Addressing the Sensory Processing Needs of Children

This one credit course is a follow up to the course: Overview of Sensory Processing Needs of Children. In that previous course, participants received an overview of Sensory Processing Disorders. This course will take the next steps and assist teachers to address those sensory needs in the school setting. Participants will demonstrate knowledge of individualized instruction and be able to adapt instruction and environments for students. This course is targeted for special education teachers, intervention teachers, and regular classroom teachers in K-12. Prerequisites for this course are listed on the syllabus.

ED 589 Basic Reading Skills for Students in Grades 3-5

This one credit course is designed to assist with teaching basic reading skills to students in grades 3-5. Effective strategies will be presented so that teachers can engage older students more deeply with literary activities. This course is targeted for classroom teachers, special education teachers, and intervention teachers who work with students in grades 3-5.

ED 589 Empowering Students by Matching Instruction to Personalities and Learning Styles

This one credit course will provide teachers an understanding of how to effectively communicate with students based on their personality types and learning styles. Exploring different approaches will allow teachers to also have better student engagement and better classroom management. Participants will demonstrate knowledge of how to individualize instruction. The target audience for this course includes classroom teachers K-12, intervention and special education teachers.

This one credit course is designed to provide an understanding of Sensory Processing Disorders and to assist teachers in recognizing the sensory needs of children. Many students are misunderstood because their sensory related issues are often seen as misbehavior. A deeper understanding of the history of this disorder and its symptoms will guide teachers in understanding the struggles some children have with overwhelming sensations from their bodies and environments. Participants will become knowledgeable about learning exceptionalities and conditions which affect student learning. This course is targeted for administrators, special education teachers, intervention teachers, and regular classroom teachers in K-12. The follow up course, Addressing Sensory Processing Needs of Children in the School Setting, is available upon completion of this course. It will address more specific strategies and activities.
