Glossary of Terms

  • AA= Associate of Arts 

  • AS= Associate of Science 

  • BA= Bachelor of Arts 

  • BS= Bachelor of Science 

  • Online Semester Based (OSB)= *$386.80 per credit hour - you will receive an email welcoming you to your course along with login information for Blackboard. You will use Blackboard for this type of course. This format is structured by the instructor with set beginning and end dates and deadlines for assignments/exams. 

  • Print-Based Correspondence (PB, open enrollment) = *$185 per credit hour - you will receive an email welcoming you to your course along with your linked course study guide and syllabus information. You will not use Blackboard for this type of course. This format is self-paced. Most courses have a minimum of 6 weeks to a maximum of one year to be completed. If you are intending to use financial aid for this format, you will need to complete the course before the end of the semester in which you registered. You will not have a year to complete this course.

  • Upper Division (UD)= Courses that are numbered in the 300-499 range. These course are associated with a Junior/Senior education level.

  • Lower Division (LD)= Courses that are numbered in the 100-299 range. These courses are associated with a Freshman/Sophomore education level. 

  • Developmental Education Courses= Courses that are numbered in the 000-099 range are not considered college-level and do not count toward graduation requirements. 

  • Elective= An elective course is any course that is not required within the degree core or general education. A degree seeking student can select any course that interests him/her to fulfill the electives requirements so long as he/she satisfies the prerequisites. 

  • Degree Seeking= A student is considered degree seeking if they have applied to an Adams State University degree program, have completed the application steps, and have been admitted to ASU.

  • Extended Studies/Distance Learning= The ASU Extended Studies department offers distance learning courses and programs that do not require any face-to-face interaction and can be completed online at your convenience. 

  • Course Prerequisites= Course(s) needed in order to successfully complete a course due to needed prior knowledge. Adams State University admitted degree seeking students are required to meet course prerequisites.

  • Withdrawal= It is possible to withdrawal from course(s) before the term's withdrawal deadline if using federal financial aid or six (6) months from date of course registration if paying out-of-pocket. No funds will be refunded and a 'W' will appear on a student's official transcript with no implications towards GPA or earned credit. Please refer to the Distance Learning Calendar for federal financial aid withdrawal deadlines per semester. Please contact exstudies@adams.edu to request an official drop/withdrawal form to complete and return to our office.

  • Drop= It is possible to drop a course before the term's drop/census deadline if using federal financial aid or within thirty (30) days from the date of course registration if paying out-of-pocket. A 90% refund will be processed if paid out-of-pocket. If a student drops a course before the drop/census date or thirty (30) day deadline for that term, there will be no record of this course on the official transcript.
