Woman's Citizenship Club fashion show supports nursing scholarships
The GFWC (General Federation of Women's Clubs) Woman's Citizenship Club raised more than $2,500 at its annual fashion show, presented April 22 at Adams State College. Event proceeds support the club's scholarships for local nursing students. More than 120 people enjoyed the event, which included dinner and a silent auction. County Commissioner Darius Allen served as master of ceremonies.
The Woman's Citizenship Club awards a $2,000 scholarship to San Luis Valley residents who are accepted to or enrolled in Adams State' Bachelor's of Science in Nursing program. To be eligible, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The club this year introduced a similar scholarship of $500 for nursing students at Trinidad State Junior College.
ASC student Darcy Boehm received the scholarship for 2010-11. She completed her associate's degree in nursing in 1993 and twice began the bachelor's program, but financial issues made it difficult for her continue.
"After serving as a hospice nurse for my father for a year, I was determined to come back and get my degree," she said. "Aida Sahud, director of the Adams State nursing program, just made it work for me."
