Valley author publishes book on healthcare reform

author tom deegan

With 17 years as a registered nurse behind him, Tom Deegan, RN, draws on his experience at a dozen community hospitals to recast the healthcare debate from the bottom up in his new book now available on Kindle, Healthcare... A View from the Trenches. This book picks up where the rhetoric of public officials ends. Healthcare... a View from the Trenches reduces theory to real life with a mix of anecdotes and common sense analysis of why our healthcare costs twice as much as any other developed country's healthcare. It offers a different look at contentious health issues like end-of-life care, excessive overhead costs, and electronic record keeping as well as a new slant on emergency room care, chronic diseases, and superbugs.

Deegan said: "What I see daily in action does not mesh with the truisms of those who are designing the flow of healthcare delivery. Well-intentioned as the highly educated planners are, they miss a lot. They have focused solely on universally available healthcare care and the tension between insurance companies and government payers. They naively suppose that computer record keeping will solve all our other problems."

With tales and anecdotes of his life on the front lines of the healthcare industry, Deegan illuminates many day to day problems in the ways hospitals and emergency rooms are run that often go out of sight and out of mind.

Deegan will share his perspective on healthcare reform at "Talk Straight to Adams State" healthcare forum, "Affordable Care Act: What You Need to Know," from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in Adams State University McDaniel Hall room 101.

Deegan will be a part of an expert panel of other professionals sharing their views and knowledge on this important issue. For more information, please call ASU Community Partnerships at 719-587-8209.
