Adams State Counseling and Career Center continues to offer prevention services to students

The Adams State College Counseling and Career Center has recently started a prevention group, Prevention Awareness Crew, which will work with the greater campus population on healthy choices related to alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, responsible sexual behavior, and sexual assault prevention.

According to Gregg Elliott, director of the Counseling and Career Center, the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) that was active on campus has changed. "We are rolling it into the larger prevention group. We will still have an emphasis and a campus presence related to sexual assault prevention."

Because the PAC will include many aspects of prevention, Elliott said the Sexual Assault Response Team, SART, will no longer be active including the phone line dedicated to SART. Students are encouraged to contact Tu Casa's 24/7 sexual assault hotline at 719-589-2465. "Our hotline did not receive a lot of calls. Our goal now is to help students, faculty, and staff become better educated in all aspects of prevention, in order to assist someone in need."

He said Tu Casa is always looking for volunteers to help staff their advocacy hotline. Discontinuing the Adams State SART line lends volunteer resources for Tu Casa.

Elliott said the PAC committee is meeting this week to begin scheduling events to help educate the entire campus community about the importance of prevention. An upper division psychology course, offered for one credit, on prevention awareness is available for interested, and eligible, students. Students interested in enrolling should contact Elliott at 719-587-7746.

"Adams State PAC is part of the Bacchus Network," Elliott said. "Bacchus is a national organization of collegiate peer education groups with a heavy emphasis on alcohol and tobacco prevention and responsible sexual behavior."
