Autumn@Adams celebrates ten years

James Trujillo, Adams State University executive assistant to the president, makes announcements at the 2012 cook-off.

The tenth annual Adams State University Autumn@Adams Week is September 9 through September 14. Events compliment the 2013 theme, Health, Fitness, and Beyond/Salud, Buena Forma Física y Más, including promoting positive mental health; exploring meditation and inner peace; stronger leadership through physical health; and a comprehensive look at future wellness.

The popular Last Lecture returns with presentations by Dr. Leslie Cramblet Alvarez, associate professor of psychology; and Dr. Tracy Doyle, professor and chair of music. The sixth annual cook-off will complete the week's events.

The following events take place at 7 p.m. in McDaniel Hall: Monday, Sept. 9: "End of Life…the Practicalities;" panel discussion with Tom Deegan, handouts will be available; Tuesday, Sept. 10: "Access to Positive Mental Health," Kristina Daniel, SLV Mental Health associate director of clinical operations; Wednesday, September 11: Last Lecture with Alvarez and Doyle.

In addition, a temporary labyrinth will be available for people to do a walking meditation through the week on the south lawn of McDaniel Hall. A labyrinth dedication and food drive will start at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11. A mindfulness meditation will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the labyrinth.

An open house/grand opening of the Human Performance and Physical Education Department will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at the East Campus (formerly Evans Elementary). At noon on that same day, Dr. Beez Schell, HPPE chair, will lecture on "Strategies to Maintain Lifetime Wellness," in McDaniel Hall room 101.

The above events are free and open to the public. Free refreshments will be served.

The Cook-Off begins at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, on the North Campus Green. Contestants pay $10 per entry and participants pay $3 to sample all the green chile, red chile and salsa and vote on their favorite.
