Children with a desire to express themselves through song will have the opportunity to join the San Luis Valley Children's Chorus. The choir is open to children in grades fourth through sixth. A festival, to kick-off the auditions and rehearsals, is scheduled from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in the Adams State University Leon Memorial Hall. A $10 fee includes lunch, workshops and a concert at the end of the day.

Open auditions for the children's choir will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Adams State Music Building room 202. No preparation is necessary for the audition.

Rehearsals will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, and will continue on Mondays throughout the academic year. The cost for the year-long program is $50.

When Meghan Goodner, Sargent School K-12 music teacher, approached Dr. Tracy Doyle, Adams State Music Department chair, about starting a children's choir for the San Luis Valley, Doyle readily agreed and offered space in the Music Building for rehearsals.

"Singing is such a fundamental and essential part of our lives and this organization will provide children with the time and space to explore their voices and make music together," Doyle said.

Veronica Starcher, Monte Vista Elementary School music teacher, is also involved in the planning and executing the choir rehearsals.

"I want to build a strong community of singers and empower the children," Goodner said. She believes singing provides opportunities for children to grow socially and emotionally. "I want to encourage and support musical and artistic talents in our children."
