The Adams State University Human Performance and Physical Education Department (HPPE) moved into East Campus last spring and invite the public to their open house and grand opening from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. East Campus was formerly known as Evans Elementary, located on First St. and La Veta Ave.

Participants are invited to wear a jersey or cap for their favorite sports team.

A brief Grand Opening ceremony will start the events off at 4 p.m. at the facility's La Veta entrance.

The event is part of the tenth annual Adams State University Autumn@Adams Week, September 9 through September 14. The 2013 theme, Health, Fitness, and Beyond/Salud, Buena Forma Física y Más, includes promoting positive mental health; exploring meditation and inner peace; stronger leadership through physical health; and a comprehensive look at future wellness.

The open house will include live music by Rippah Shreddahs who will sponsor a skanking dance competition with prizes. Free food will be catered by Rubi Slipper.

During the open house, Dr. Beez Schell, HPPE chair, said community members will have the opportunity to tour the facilities including the latest technology in human performance and physical activity assessment, updated classrooms and student-centered design to optimize learning.

Earlier that day, Jeremy Yeats, HPPE assistant professor, will present "Empower U: ASU's Commitment to Healthy Eating and Physical Activity," at noon in McDaniel Hall room 101.

A strategic planning task force, Adapted Intervention Mapping (AIM) identified healthy eating and physical activity changes to promote within Adams State and the Alamosa community. Empower U is the new wellness committee to promote and institute these changes. "Please come join us as we give updates on our process and look for participants for the upcoming activities we have planned this year."
