The addition of two new recreational club sports at Adams State College provides additional opportunities for students. According to its director, Mick Daniel, the Student Life and Recreation Department added Ski Mountaineering and Mountain Biking and Collegiate Climbing Series (CCS) Climbing Team for the fall 2012 semester.

Recruitment for climbing, ski mountaineering, and mountain biking teams will start this spring for competition starting in the 2012/2013 academic year. The college, being centrally located, between the Monarch, Taos, and Wolf Creek Ski Resorts made this a perfect venue for ski athletes. In addition, Penitente Canyon offers world class rock climbing in a natural outdoor setting as well as some of the nation's best training trails for mountain biking.

Assistant Coordinator of Intramurals and Club Sports, Elvie Conley, said, "We believe this will be an excellent area for students to explore their potential, and develop their skills and talents." Adams State is based in some of the world's most premier training ground for recreational team sports. The college is also currently ranked 12th in the nation under USA Climbing and the CCS. "We would like to continue this tradition of excellence and let students know we have something for everyone in our department," Conley said. "We would like to extend a warm welcome to all current, returning, and new students interested our programs here at Adams State."

The Student Life and Recreation Department will continue to offer first class programs, coaches, and student scholarship opportunities for all new first-year students. Daniel expects the addition to the program will attract approximately 50 new athletes to Adams State, in just the first year.
