Adams State University's Model United Nations team recently traveled to Prague, Czech republic to attend the latest Model UN conference. MUN is an international organization that allows high school and college/university students to learn about and simulate international diplomacy and global conflict resolution.

The Adams State team has competed for over eight years and has been to five international conferences and one international diplomatic mission. Members who traveled to Prague include Laurel Heimstra and Valerie Gsoell, historical security council; Laura Cox and Vangie Stratton, human rights council; and Sarah Krupski and Joseph Chavez, economic and social council. Dr. Mari Centeno, associate professor of political science, is the ASU MUN sponsor and mentor.

To prepare for this conference the six team members had to research their assigned countries (which could not be the United States), the two issues from their assigned committee, and the political stance of not only their country, but the other member states on the committee. Some of the topics included the Warsaw Pact Invasion of 1968, the death penalty, and human rights in post-Arab Spring democracies.

The team performed very well, receiving many compliments from the chairs and organizers, at the three-day conference in Prague. Once again, ASU MUN was the only team from the United States. In addition to the long conference days, the group was able to experience the atmosphere and culture of Prague through tours and events sponsored by the conference. This, in addition to the international networking, allowed the team to favorably represent Adams State to other students from across the globe.

Beyond the academic work and fund raising, MUN is known for its community involvement and service. If you have a project or service need, please join the Facebook page at ASU Model United Nations or attend a weekly meetings from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesdays in McDaniel Hall room 381.
