ASC meningitis case is viral

The Alamosa County Health Department announced the recent case of meningitis involving an Adams State student was diagnosed as viral, not bacterial. The student is receiving medical care.

Meningitis caused by a virus is serious but rarely fatal. The best way to protect from any viral infection is thorough hand washing and not sharing water bottles, chap-stick, make-up, etc.

There are no recommendations for mass vaccinations with viral caused meningitis, because there is no vaccine to prevent this type of meningitis. Health officials still recommend that children and young adults be immunized to prevent the more dangerous bacterial meningococcal meningitis.
