Alta/1st Stop scholarship established with Adams State College

Growth of their company and the need for accurate accounting inspired Pester Marketing to establish a scholarship for Adams State College students majoring in business. Pester Marketing, owner of Alta/1st Stop established a scholarship valued at $7000.

Kyli Kehler '12, business and government major, received one of the three scholarships awarded this year. She was overcome with emotions when first reading the award letter. "I was honored to have the college select me." Recently, Kehler's grandmother, Sally Kehler, passed. "The news was something I needed right now. The first person I wanted to call was my grandmother. I know she is proud of me."

Although a Denver based business, Pester Marketing purchased the local company, Alta Fuels, in 2008. Rich Spresser, president of Pester Marketing, said the company has grown dramatically over the last few years and there need for accountants grows with it. Currently, 11 Adams State alumni work for Alta Fuels. "We have had really good luck hiring Adams State graduates. They work out well, which is why we created the scholarship specific to Adams State."

Spresser received his degree from Fort Hays State University and has been with Pester Marketing since 1994. "The job market continues to become more highly competitive. Potential employees with an undergraduate degree are provided with more opportunities and possess a greater competitive edge."

Combined with the 1st Stop Convenient Stores, also owned by Pester Marketing, Spresser said they employ over 150 in the San Luis Valley. "The San Luis Valley is a good business environment."

The scholarship is awarded once a year with one scholarship valued at $3000 and two at $2000; the highest GPA will be awarded $3000. Requirements for the scholarship include majoring in business, a GPA of 3.0 or above; a graduate of a San Luis Valley high school; and a junior or senior for the award year.
