Adams State College recognizes that in today's modern and interdependent society good communications skills are important. As our world gets smaller and smaller due to sophisticated travel and communication technology, the study of more than one language and culture opens up career opportunities and enrich our total life experiences. More and more employers are seeking to employ people who speak and understand other languages and cultures. Languages are used in almost all areas of the travel, recreation and hotel industries. The same can be said for all areas of international business and marketing. In the areas of federal, state and local government jobs the knowledge of a language other than English is rapidly becoming essential.
Adams State College offers instruction in Spanish and Japanese. A full major and minor language program is offered in Spanish, as well as a program for secondary education.
All of our language courses are taught in accordance with the language communicative objectives established by ACTFL guidelines. All Spanish language majors take a comprehensive exam in Speaking, Writing, Culture and Literature. Students wishing to teach Spanish must score a 2 (Advanced Level) or higher on the ACTFL scale.
Spanish For Medical Personnel
Medical clinics, hospitals, emergency centers and nursing care units routinely seek out employees who can speak Spanish. Paramedics and other emergency personal consistently encounter situations where a knowledge of Spanish is crucial. In some cases the knowledge of Spanish can save someone's life. An increasing number of doctors and nurses are including Spanish in their studies.
Spanish For Business
Everday formal and non-formal business transactions take place in the United States. Surverys have shown that business contacts that deal with the Spanish speaking population are more likely to have positive results when the business repesentative demonstrates a knowledge of the client's language and culture. Many employers know this. As a result, most companies who do business with the Spanish speaking population prefer employees who know the language of their clients.
