August is National Make a Will Month

The Adams State University Foundation joins organizations nationwide in observing National Make a Will Month throughout August. The movement encourages community members to create or update their wills while considering how they can leave a lasting impact on Adams State.

National Make-A-Will Month, raises awareness about the empowerment and peace of mind that comes from having an up-to-date will. Only about 32 percent of Americans have completed this crucial document.

“National Make a Will Month provides the perfect opportunity for our Adams State family and community members to create a meaningful legacy,” said Tammy Lopez, executive director of the Foundation. “By including Adams State in their estate plans, donors become members of our Billy Adams Society, ensuring access to higher education for future generations of students. When donors notify us of their planned estate gift, they ensure the intent of their gift will be met exactly as they wish.”

Join the Billy Adams Society

Supporters who include Adams State in their estate plans become members of the Billy Adams Society, a special recognition program honoring those committed to the university’s future. These thoughtful gifts help fund scholarships, support academic programs, enhance campus facilities, and provide resources that directly benefit students and faculty.

Billy Adams Society members can include the University in their plans through several options:

  • A specific dollar amount or percentage of the estate
  • Specific assets such as stocks, real estate, or personal property
  • Residual gifts (what remains after other bequests are fulfilled)

Getting Started

Creating a will doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Many people can complete a basic will in as little as 30 minutes using online resources, though consulting with an estate planning attorney is recommended for complex situations.

The Adams State University Foundation offers resources and guidance for those interested in joining the Billy Adams Society. Supporters can contact the foundation directly or visit the university’s planned giving website at adamsstateplannedgiving.pgdonors.org for comprehensive information about gift options and estate planning resources.

“We understand that estate planning is a deeply personal process,” added Lopez. “We are here to provide information and support, ensuring that donors can make informed decisions about how their gifts will advance the Adams State mission.”

Take Action This August

As National Make a Will Month continues throughout August, the Adams State University Foundation encourages everyone to take this important step in securing their future and considering membership in the Billy Adams Society.
