Adams State Theatre kicks off its 2025-2026 production season with a stage adaptation of Stephen King’s Classic novel, “Misery.” The play premiered on Broadway in 2016 and has since become a favorite of theatres across the country. Tickets go on sale Monday, September 15.
This year, as Adams State University marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of its doors, we also celebrate 100 years of theatre on campus. The arts have been a central part of the university’s identity since the very beginning and provide cultural and entertainment opportunities for campus and community.
Well-known to the many fans of both the novel and film, “Misery” follows successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, and wakes up captive in her secluded home. He quickly realizes Annie has no intention of letting him go. What happens when a fan loves a story too much? “Misery” explores the terrifying consequences of obsession, isolation, and control. It has been said of King’s story that it is a love story … almost. Get ready, things are going to get “oogy.”
Directed by John Taylor, Ph.D., director of the School of Visual and Performing Arts and chair of the Theatre Department, “Misery” is equal parts psychological horror and thriller. “It’s a fun way to kick off our 100th year and the Halloween season,” Dr. Taylor said. “Though his work isn’t my typical directorial choice, I was drawn to the challenge of bringing King’s unique brand of storytelling to the stage. While William Goldman’s script is more of an adaptation of his own popular screenplay than King’s novel, the play remains faithful to the original source material. If you are a fan of King, you’re going to enjoy this show.”
Public performances of “Misery,” begin at 7:30 p.m. September 26, 27, October 3, 4; and a matinee begins at 2 p.m. October 5 on the San Luis Valley Federal Bank Main Stage, located in the Theatre Building. The production contains adult language and acts of violence. Tickets go on sale online on September 15 and are $13 for general public and free to Associated Students and Faculty with current Adams State identification. Starting September 15, the in-person box office is open from 2:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets may be purchased at theatre.adams.edu or may be reserved by calling 719-587-8499.
