Runners preparing for a meet, coaches providing final words of advice and encouragement, and a beautiful course – all very fitting to pay tribute to the late Coach Joe I. Vigil, Ph.D.

When Dr. Vigil retired from Adams State University, where his illustrious career began, Damon Martin, Adams State head coach of the cross country and track and field programs, established the Joe I. Vigil Cross Country Open.

The 32nd annual meet will honor the late Coach Vigil, who passed away in July, 2025. “We will pay tribute to Coach Vigil with a moment of silence before the races begin and a large screen placed in an easy access area will play a variety of video interviews with Dr. Vigil,” Coach Martin said.

Peggy Vigil, daughter of Coach Vigil, is planning to attend and pass out the awards. “We welcome anyone who wants to come out and support our collegiate runners and honor the man who dedicated his world-renowned career to running,” Coach Martin added.

The 32nd Annual Joe I. Vigil Open begins with the National Anthem and recognition of Dr. Vigil at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Cattails Golf Course. The University Open Men event starts at 8:35 a.m., followed by the University Open Women at 9:10 a.m. High school and middle school races, beginning at 9:40 a.m., attract schools from around Colorado and New Mexico.

Acknowledging the outstanding service to Adams State and his international fame as a running coach, the Joe I. Vigil Endowment was established by Coach Martin in 2021.

Through proceeds from the Joe I. Vigil Open, “Chasing Excellence,” by Pat Melgares ‘89, and generous donations, the Endowment is very near the $100,000 goal, ensuring Adams State will retain its top spot in collegiate running by supporting student athletes. Visit Joe I. Vigil Endowment to donate.

The family of Coach Joe I. Vigil will keep Adams State updated with future plans for a memorial service and the University will pass it along to alumni and the community.
