Adams State University alumnus Scott Koppenhafer was killed in Iraq while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Adams State extends sympathy for the fallen Marine to all his family and friends.

Koppenhafer, 35, of Mancos, Colo., wrestled for Adams State for three years and graduated Cum Laude in 2005 with a degree in business administration. He joined the Marines soon after graduation.

According to a Marine Corp release, Koppenhafer received two Bronze Stars and two Combat Action Ribbons over his career.

He died on Aug. 10 after being engaged by enemy small arms fire while advising and accompanying Iraqi security forces on a planned operation in Ninewah province, Iraq, according to military officials.
