When Leanna Brazel returned to pursue her degree in elementary education at Adams State University, the support from fellow students, professors, and most importantly her family, made the transition smooth and achievable. The Adams State University Teacher Education Department recently nominated her to be inducted into Colorado’s Future Educator Honor Roll.

Curtis Garcia, associate professor and chair of the Teacher Education Department, said the department believes Leanna’s strong skills in professionalism, pedagogy and classroom management, combined with her dedication to all students, reflect the core values of the Adams State Teacher Education Department and make Leanna the perfect nominee for this honor.

Being nominated is humbling. “It is not just a reflection on me, but on everyone I have learned from.” Her education professors, teachers from SLV schools, provided a strong foundation for Brazel and observing teachers in their classroom took her to the next level.

Leanna Brazel She is currently student teaching in Andrea Malouff’s, Alamosa Elementary kindergarten class. Malouff, who has been an exceptional mentor, believes Leanna’s passion, inquiry based learning and dedication will have a true impact on her teaching profession. “She is able to build positive relationships with all students and colleagues that she embraces on a daily basis,” Malouff said.

Brazel will graduate on May 11 and is eager to continue her great story as an elementary teacher in the San Luis Valley. “I want to support them emotionally and socially, as well as academically.”

Being a mom and a non-traditional student was an asset for Brazel. Her past experiences and support from home and school guided her through college and prepared her well in becoming a future educator. “No other job for me is as rewarding as teaching. The best feeling is seeing all students succeed.”

Colorado’s Future Educator Honor Roll honorees are recognized by the Colorado Department of Higher Education at an event in Denver, Colo., as a lead up to Teacher Appreciation week in May.
