Alice M. Burch, D.N.P. will be featured in a podcast through the Journal of School Nursing, on June 1. It is based on the article that was published based on Dr. Burch’s doctoral research.
Article Abstract
“Rural school nurses are on the front lines of providing health care for children and families in rural Colorado, but there is little research from their perspective.  To fill this gap, a descriptive phenomenological study examined the experiences of nine rural school nurses through in-person audiotaped interviews.  Analysis of data revealed three main themes: (1) rural school nurses’ efforts to meet students’ extensive physical and mental health issues, (2) school nurses struggle to help rural students in extreme poverty, and (3) communication challenges experienced by rural school nurses.  The findings of this study give voice to the experiences and challenges faced by rural school nurses in southern Colorado.” (Burch, A. & Stoeckel, P, 2021).

Nick Saenz, Heidi Schneider
Dr. Nick Saenz and Dr. Heidi Schneider

Nick Saenz, Ph.D., professor of history and special assistant to the president, and Heidi Schneider, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology, inclusive excellence liaison and faculty trustee, were recently appointed to the Colorado Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Consortium Steering Committee. The HSI Consortium was co-founded by Colorado Department of Higher Education and executive level members at Colorado’s HSIs and emerging HSIs. The purpose of the HSI Consortium is to provide a collaborative community of HSIs aimed at strengthening our organizational capacity to intentionally serve Latinx/Hispanic students. The consortium will provide professional development and networking opportunities, share resources and information, cultivate collaboration to seek federal and foundation funding, and engage in community partnerships. These goals and activities will be developed and implemented by the steering committee. Drs. Saenz and Schneider are honored and excited to represent Adams and work towards sharing best practices and frameworks to better support and serve our Hispanic/Latinx students, staff, and faculty.
Dr. Saenz and Dr. Heidi Schneider presented at AAC&U Conference on Diversity, Equity, and Student Success: “Can We Handle Truth?” in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their presentation, “Speaking Truth to Power in Rural America: Grassroots Mobilization of Faculty and Staff in Pursuit of Educational Justice” reviewed over twenty years of equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives at Adams. Drs. Saenz and Schneider presented the role of specific tactics and strategies for institutional change; appraisal of the significance of cost-neutral and grant-funded objectives to promote institution change outside of senior-level decision-making; and processes to evaluate stakeholders and barriers to the implementation of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) objectives.
