Art students welcomed back

Angelica Raya received the most votes from fellow students for her sculpture, "Silver Dragon."

With brightly colored tabs, Adams State University art students selected their favorite artwork at the Art Department welcome-back event. A sculpture by Angelica Raya received first place; Morris Sowards’ painting took second; and Daniel Parson and Rachel Kresl tied for third place with their pieces. All four students received vouchers to the Adams State Bookstore.

Along with slices of pizza, the students each received 3 stickers to place next to their favorite artwork. Hanging in the Cloyde Snook and Hatfield Galleries, and in hallway display cases, the artwork included functional to decorative, painting to graphic design, and realistic to abstract.

Art Department Chair Claire Van der Plas said the event presented an opportunity for faculty and students to mingle and reacquaint after the winter break. "At the beginning of every semester the Art Department hosts an event to build excitement and energy for the students."

Roger Erikson, professor of art, added the informal gathering provided space for students from different art disciplines to visit and display their work. "We want the students to think about displaying their work as well as creating it."
