Across campus, Adams State University students follow routes leading to classrooms, rehearsals, laboratories, and practice. They seem carefree with backpacks slung over shoulders and headphones providing a soundtrack to their lives. On the outside, their academic path seems to be proceeding smoothly, with few worries.

However, the burdens current students face can weigh on their minds and take a toll on their academic success. Financial stress is probably the biggest factor when adding up the cost of attendance along with living expenses like medical care, groceries, filling up the gas tank, and paying rent. Those costs can make the difference between realizing goals or having to sacrifice a future professional career for a less lucrative job that pays immediate bills.

At Adams State, students have options, thanks to generous donations from alumni and friends. Contributions made to funds like the Grizzly Persist Fund are used to ensure students can continue their education and realize their professional goals. Students facing a financial barrier can apply for immediate assistance to this fund and others.

Adams State has a fund to help with any food insecurities students might be facing. “And immediately a generous donor from the community stepped up and pledged $8,000, as a matching gift,” said Vice President of Advancement Jake Rissler. A matching gift means all donations, up to $8,000, will go twice as far. Every dollar contributed will be doubled, maximizing the impact for students in need; $25 becomes $50 to help a student purchase groceries.

“Like many others, scholarships and other financial assistance I received as a student inspires me to give back, now that I am in a position to do so,” VP Rissler added. “We are counting on our community to reach out with any amount they can afford to build up this fund and assure our students can remain focused on their studies.”
