Adams State University Graduate Art Student Jasmine Little will show her thesis work in the Cloyde Snook Gallery. The opening reception for Giant Rock, 1999, is from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, April 17, in the Art Building. The event is free and open to the public.

The thesis body of work, Giant Rock, 1999, reflects Little’s experience growing up and going to college in the desert in California. "The paintings use figures and the desert landscape in order to convey the content. The specific narrative of the memories is not as important as the universal emotions attached to them. The curated nature of memory is also deconstructed in the paintings through the painting process." The process involves choosing a specific memory, sketching it, reconstructing it three dimensionally in clay, and then rendering it in paint. This build up to the actual application of the paint on the surface allows the memory to be fully realized and constructed in order to convey the feelings being highlighted in the painting.

"The paintings are all rendered in a large scale, ten feet by seven feet, which has the effect of submerging the viewer in the scene as well as making the viewer more aware of the their own presence and relationship to their surrounding in the gallery," Little said. "I have specific intentionality behind all the aspects and interstices of the paintings, but the viewer can take away whatever they like from the paintings. They are very open ended."

The show continues through April 24. For more information, contact the Art Department at 719-587-7823.
