In celebration of Women’s Week, the Adams State University Faculty Lecture Series welcomes guest lecturer and author Leora Tanenbuam. Her presentation, Slut Shaming in the Age of the Internet, begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Art Building room 227. The lecture will include what it is like to grow up in a culture of slut-bashing and slut-shaming and ways we can reform this culture.
Tanenbaum’s, newest book I Am Not a Slut: Slut-Shaming in the Age of the Internet, offers a fresh perspective on the phenomenon of teenage girls and young women labeling each other "sluts" and "hos." It has been named one of 11 "groundbreaking books about women making history" by Bustle Magazine, and is a sequel to Slut! Growing Up Female With a Bad Reputation, in which Tanenbuam coined the term "slut-bashing." Slut! is a staple in sociology and gender/women’s studies courses on college campuses around the United States. It was chosen by Ecosalon magazine as one of the 20 "must-read" books of all time for women.
Other books by Tanenbuam include Taking Back God: American Women Rising Up for Religious Equality, Catfight: Rivalries Among Women: From Diets to Dating, From the Boardroom to the Delivery Room, and Bad Shoes & The Women Who Love Them.
Tanenbuam, editorial director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its advocacy and political branch, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, lectures widely and regularly discusses girls’ and women’s issues on TV news and entertainment shows.
