Adams State was proudly represented at this year’s National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in Higher Education. Andrea Benton-Maestas, Office of Title V PPHOA activities director; and Anna Torello, Office of Title V interim project director; along with Jeff Gallegos, One Stop Student Services administrative assistant III; attended NCORE in New Orleans, La., May 31 through June 3, 2023. They learned and networked with nearly 6,000 other attendees all in the fight for equity and justice in higher education.
In 1988, The Southwest Center for Human Relations Studies launched the first Annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE®) to address the resurgence of racist incidents in higher education. Since its inception, the conference has evolved into a vital national resource for higher education institutions, providing an annual multicultural forum that attracts Black/African Americans, American Indians, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Latino/as, and European Americans among other marginalized populations representing campuses across the United States. School of STEM Director Benita Brink, Ph.D., completed “The Chronicle’s Strategic-Leadership Program for Department Chairs” this summer. The leadership program is a comprehensive virtual leadership series for department chairs and other university leaders. The series, June 6-20, kicked off with a strategy workshop to identify shared challenges, followed by six seminars focused on national trends in higher education; the higher education business model; faculty diversity; enrollment and retention; and innovations in teaching and learning. The series concluded with an implementation workshop to take the concrete knowledge gained from the preceding events to produce individualized development plans for the year ahead.
